Joseph Baker presenting the Empowerment Series to students

Program Overview

What Is the Empowerment Series?

The Scholarship & Education Empowerment Series is Joseph Baker's flagship educational program — a multi-session curriculum built on two decades of lived experience, four Purdue University degrees, and rigorous civil-rights research.

Designed specifically for Title I schools and underserved communities, the program meets students where they are and challenges them to envision where they can go. Every session is grounded in data, driven by story, and delivered with the authority of someone who has walked the path.

Curriculum Topics

What the Program Covers

Recidivism Prevention

An honest, data-driven examination of the school-to-prison pipeline — and how education, mentorship, and civic engagement break it at every stage. Joseph speaks from research and from experience.

The Importance of Education

From GED to four Purdue degrees — Joseph's academic journey becomes a living proof point that education is not a privilege but a weapon against circumstance. This session reframes what school means.

Legal Literacy for Youth

Understanding your rights is not optional — it is survival. This session covers constitutional basics, interactions with law enforcement, and how the legal system works for and against young people.

Civil Rights History & Legacy

The movement did not end — it evolved. Students explore the arc of civil rights from Reconstruction through today, and understand how their choices connect to a larger historical struggle.

Voting Rights & Civic Power

Disenfranchisement is not accidental. This session examines the history of voting rights suppression, current barriers, and why casting a ballot is one of the most powerful acts of resistance available.

Youth Empowerment & Personal Transformation

The capstone session. Students leave with a personal action plan, an understanding of their own power, and the conviction that their story — whatever it is — is not their destiny.
